Starting from April 2013, the grant program i3 [idea-impulse-innovation] of Rinat Akhmetov's Foundation for Development of Ukraine will get the new component – writer’s scholarships. The Fund will continue to support literature initiatives, such as literature readings, debates, festivals, etc, besides applications for the publication of literature works.
Rinat Akhmetov's Foundation for Development of Ukraine to give writer’s scholarships
The scholarship program is aimed at development of Ukrainian literature by creating the conditions for writing fiction and nonfiction works for the writers (individuals) with considerable literature achievements and/or significant creativity, confirmed by the reference letters filed to the program. The decision on granting the scholarships is taken by the Scholarship Council composed of experts: Vera Ageeva, Vera Baldynyuk, Aleksandr Koval, Andrey Kurkov and Olesya Ostrovskaya-Luta.
According to Andrey Kurkov, the writer’s scholarship is the best motivator for work. "This releases the writer’s time and thought from domestic problems and allows him/her to focus solely on writing. The scholarship gives the writer the time to write an unscheduled novel".
Olesya Ostrovskaya-Luta, director of "Dynamic Culture" programs and projects of Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation: "The grant program i3 exists for over 2 years now. At the start we were supporting the overall "Literature" area. It includes international and Ukrainian literary and poetry festivals, forums, professional trips of the writers, translators, and, of course, creation of books, including electronic, publishing. However, dealing more with the writers, we have come to the conclusion that it is essential not only to support the projects of so-called "second-level", for example, the reading of literature works, but also help to create these works. In the end, we all understand that Ukraine is one of those few countries of the European continent, where there is practically no support of writer scholarship. It needs to be fixed.
The scholarship is not higher that UAH 7,000 per month. Scholarship term - up to 3 months for 2013-2014.
