For 8 months of work in Donetsk Region medical professionals of the Antituberculosis Service provided more than 1,700 teleconsultations using modern telemedicine equipment. Ukraine’s first telemedicine network for Antituberculosis Service was created by Rinat Akhmetov Foundation for Development of Ukraine in October 2013 in the framework of the Regional Antituberculosis Initiative.
The Doctors of Antituberculosis Services of Donbas Conducted More Than 1,700 Remote Consultations Using Equipment Purchased by the Foundation for Development of Ukraine
The network covers the basic Antituberculosis services in 5 cities of Donetsk Region: Donetsk, Mariupol, Kramatorsk, Gorlovka and Shakhtersk. Despite the difficult situation in the region, the network has three main tasks, for which actually it was created. The first one - a fast and correct diagnosis and early treatment of patients. For comparison, earlier to establish a diagnosis “drug-resistant TB” the patients had to wait about two weeks - until the medical records will not get to Donetsk for consideration by a special medical advisory committee. Now, this path is not necessary.
The second task of the telemedicine network - saving budget of antituberculosis institutions and medical services providers: they do not need to travel to Donetsk for medical advice.
The third objective is improving the quality of medical services for patients of antituberculosis institutions. Now the patient does not need to travel to the regional clinic for advice, spend time and money for a travel. In today’s situation in Donetsk Region it is particularly important because this refers to a security of movement of both physicians and patients with tuberculosis. As of today, the doctors have already made more than 1,700 patient consultations and telemedicine network continues its work.
