Today, on March 24 we celebrate World Tuberculosis Day. This disease was declared as an epidemic in Ukraine way back in 1995. Our country is ranked second in Europe in terms of the amount of TB patients (Russia is the first). According the State Service of Ukraine, in 2013, while fighting HIV infection/AIDS and other socially dangerous diseases 30,819 Ukrainians fell ill with TB. In total, 56, 007 people are registered (data as of 01.10.2013).

Traditionally on this day Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation Development of Ukraine, together with its partners within the Stop TB in Ukraine Program, hold an event on free-of-charge, anonymous and safe examination with modern mobile digital fluoromobiles*. Such examination enables the detection of lung diseases at an early stage, including TB, and other chest pathologies. Detection of the disease at an early stage helps prescribe the right treatment in time, which is a foundation for a successful recovery.

“With this event we aim not only to draw attention to the TB issue and asking people to treat their health with all the responsibility but also to show the right algorithm for TB detection. If a person noticed the TB symptoms – coughing for more than 2-3 weeks, excessive sweating in the night, weakness, groundless loss of weight, temperature 37-37.5С – then this person needs to consult a doctor and undergo the prescribed tests: make a fluorography, undergo the sputum test. Earlier it took two months to be diagnosed with TB but now Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation supplied modern equipment practically to all regions, which is why patients are precisely diagnosed and the right treatment plans are prescribed within a of maximum 2 days. Also, the Foundation introduces telemedicine in phthisiology, which helps to make a quick and precise diagnosis without the need to transport patients, says Mariya Makovetskaya, Head of Department for Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization of Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation.

This year, the event is held by Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation together with the Health Care Department of Kiev City State Administration and Phthisiology Territorial Medical Association, International Alliance on HIV/AIDS in Ukraine ICF (Alliance), Red Cross Society in Ukraine. Near the fluorographic unit at the Southern railway station, there will be a mobile out-patient Centre of the Alliance, where on March 24-26 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. one will be able to consult tuberculotherapists, receive informational materials, and undergo a quick HIV test. Health Care Department and Phthysiology ensured the work of tuberculotherapist as well as the vehicle for transporting people with TB suspicion to the anti-TB dispensary for further examination with the modern diagnostics equipment, diagnosing and treatment.

Near the fluorogrpahic unit at the Southern railway station, the Red Cross representatives in Ukraine will inform everyone about the main TB symptoms and will offer to undergo a free-of-charge examination.

The initiative of examination with a free mobile digital photofluorographic unit proved its efficiency in detecting TB suspicions in places of accumulation of risk group representatives, particularly, at railway stations. That’s why this year Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation made a decision to place two photofluorographic units at the railway stations.
