“Today, in Dontesk region, children with tumors receive radiation therapy with the help of equipment purchased by Rinat Akhmetov Foundation “Development of Ukraine” within the framework of “Cancer Can Be Cured” program. Children now have an opportunity to undergo free-of-charge high quality diagnostics and treatment in the region of their residence, - says Irina Temerko, Foundation Manager. – At the same time, we do not forget about helping severely ill children here and now”.

“Our department has been aided by the Foundation for several years already. Since 2010, they considered requests from parents of severely ill children and tried to help as many kids as possible. There were times when with funds of the Foundation we were able to cure almost 100% of our patients. Parents turned there for help themselves. They just communicated and told each other where to go and who can actually help, – says Ekaterina Viktorovna Vilchevskaya, Chief Physician of Oncohematology Department of V.K. Gusak IEAS. – At certain moment, requests from our department became so numerous that in 2012 the Foundation decided to develop a special program and to provide medicines to oncohematology department on a regular basis. Today, medicines for children from Rinat Akhmetov Foundation may be received from the Head Nurse of the department at no cost”.

During 2012-2013, within the Foundation project “Our Small Motherland”, Oncohematology Department of V.K. Gusak IEAS on a quarterly basis received medicines and concomitant medications, which are not provided at the cost of budget funds. Owing to this, treatment was made available to over 300 children from needy families. Total amount of aid made up about 1.2 mln UAH.

Every year, at the Oncohematology Department of V.K. Gusak IEAS in Donetsk, 450-500 small patients receive their treatment. At the present moment, 41 children undergo inpatient treatment. Children stay at the hospital for quite a long time – some lucky ones check out in six months, while treatment course of other kids may last for 3-4 years. It has already been 1,5 years that a 9-year-old Nadia is fighting for her life, whose dad and a whole zoo of pets are waiting for her at home. – We learnt the diagnosis in 2012, underwent a substantial treatment course and hoped that everything was left in the past. But we stayed at home for only 4 months, in June of 2013 Nadiusha suffered a relapse. And here we are, today still receiving treatment, – with tears in her eyes, Nadya’s mom, Anna Tsygankova, shares their story.

– It is very hard, we need donors all the time. At least, we do not need to worry about medicines, we get them for free due to Rinat Akhmetov Foundation program. By good tradition, the 4th year in a row, Rinat Akhmetov Foundation “Development of Ukraine”, on the eve of the International Childhood Cancer Day, created a festive atmosphere, held workshops, invited performers. Children participated in a concert and with their own hands made bright greeting cards for their moms. Such heartfelt celebrations help the ill kids get distracted from their diseases, and positive emotions favor speedy recovery.
