Today, on February 4, the World Cancer Day, Volyn Regional Oncology Dispensary (VROD) launched operation of linear accelerator – instrument for radiological cancer treatment, which was purchased with the funds of Rinat Akhmetov Foundation “Development of Ukraine”.

8 regions of Western Ukraine are fully provided with modern equipment for oncology diagnostics and treatment by the world standards

Linear accelerator provided in Lutsk represents a high-technology instrument for precise and efficient treatment of oncology diseases. The new instrument, in an accurate and safe manner, exposes tumor cells to a significant radiation dose, consumes less energy and time for treating patients. The linear accelerator will run together with a modern computer tomography scanner, which was provided by Rinat Akhmetov Foundation “Development of Ukraine” at the end of the last year. Total budget allocated by the Foundation to equipping Volyn Regional Oncology Dispensary amounts to 18.4 mln UAH. Anatoliy Zabolotnyi, Director of Rinat Akhmetov Foundation “Development of Ukraine”: “By opening a new department at Volyn Oncology Dispensary, the Foundation completes its “Cancer Can Be Cured” program in Western Ukraine. This program resulted in establishment of 14 specialized departments in all eight regional oncologic institutions in the area, which were provided with equipment for the total amount of 98.1 mln UAH, and namely: 8 modern computer tomography scanners, two linear accelerators, gamma brachytherapy unit. All in all, in Western Ukraine, Rinat Akhmetov Foundation created facilities for treatment and diagnostics by the world standards for more than 30 thousand of oncology patients every year, including children”. Zhanna Starominskaya, Chief of Radiation Therapy Department of VROD: “The linear accelerator provided in our institution was long-awaited equipment and became the fourth device of such class in Western Ukraine. Since without it, hundreds of patients of our dispensary had to undergo treatment in the neighboring regions, which created certain inconveniences and discomfort. Today, owing to the efforts of Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, we can provide high-technology medical care to residents of our region in our own medical institution. Capacities of the device enable to radiate the tumor with a high precision, without affecting the surrounding healthy tissues. As of today, the accelerator is assembled, installed into a completely repaired room. Medical personnel were trained to operate it. Besides the accelerator, our dispensary received from Rinat Akhmetov Foundation some other expensive equipment: computer tomography scanner, which was set to operate at the end of the last year. Computer tomography scanner enables to diagnose the tumor location with high precision, perform pre-radiation preparation and further planning of radiation therapy. More than 80 patients have been diagnosed by the world standards over the first weeks of operation”. Orest Andrusenko, Head Doctor of VROD: “The program of public-private partnership “Cancer Can Be Cured”, which we are implementing together with Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, allowed access for Volyn residents to modern oncology diagnostics and treatment by the world standards. Volyn region became the 8th region of Western Ukraine, which was provided with modern radiological equipment owing to the Foundation, and today, we can say with reasonable confidence that due to such technical facilities we will be able to save hundreds and thousands of lives”.
