On December 16-20, 2013 for the first time in Ukraine, the practical training on molecular-genetic diagnostics of tuberculosis was organized by  Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation “Development of Ukraine” on the basis of the National Reference Laboratory of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in cooperation with the Supranational Reference Laboratory (Latvia). During the training, 25 specialists of laboratory network across Ukraine were trained on modern methods of diagnostics of tuberculosis. These methods shorten time necessary for diagnostics from 3 months to 1 day and increase diagnostics quality. Therefore, patient may obtain result of the research with 99, 98% level of accuracy in short period of time, with spectrum of medicine sensitivity to all anti-tuberculosis medicines, and immediately start treatment with correct scheme – that is the key to success in curing tuberculosis.

The first training on quick methods of diagnostics of tuberculosis with involvement of international experts was organized by Rinat Akhmetovs Foundation

For the realization of training on “Molecular-genetic diagnostics of tuberculosis; provisioning of quality control in genetic researches”, 3 international experts were engaged, each of them being expert in his/her field:

  • Stefan Söllner, official representative and international manager of the HAIN Company, the supplier of systems for linear probe analysis for molecular-genetic diagnostics of tuberculosis;
  • Girts Skenders, Head of Supranational Reference Laboratory for Ukraine WHO (Latvia), has sufficient experience of work with molecular-genetic methods, and as well good results in implementation of such methods into bacteriologic diagnostics of tuberculosis;
  • Vladimir Skripov, exclusive representative of Cepheid Company (producer of GeneXpert – automated device for quick diagnostics of tuberculosis).

“Within the frameworks of the program “Stop tuberculosis in Ukraine”, Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation continues financing implementation of international standards of tuberculosis diagnostics in Ukraine. And realization of such practical training with engagement of international experts is one of the most important stages in the process of implementation of new methods in the country.  For instance,  the Foundation purchased GeneXpert – automated system for express-diagnostics of tuberculosis and other laboratory equipment (autoclaves, automated dosing machines, etc.) for the National reference-laboratory of the total amount over 1 ml hrivnas for approbation of molecular-genetic methods and training laboratory personnel. In addition, training classroom was equipped by the Foundation with all the necessary organizing equipment, in order to carry out trainings and seminars on a good level on the basis of the National Reference Laboratory”, – pointed out Kristina Popova, manager of laboratory diagnostics of Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation “Development of Ukraine”.

Organizing of spaces and equipment of the National Reference Laboratory were rated high by the trainers. In particular, Stefan Söllner, official representative of the HAIN, noted: «I was very impressed by the laboratory. It is updated as much as possible, with ideal realization of demands of infection control and separation of zones. Also, it possesses great potential for increase of amount of processed samples, as all systems may work in automated regime. This laboratory is of a very high level.”

Training on molecular-genetic diagnostics of tuberculosis received positive feedbacks from its participants. According to Maria Novohatska, head of Bacteriologic Laboratory of Kharkiv Regional Tuberculosis Dispensary, this training helped to enhance the knowledge, especially in interpretation of results. “I learned that modern equipment – when conducting tests – may indicate presence of mixes – several strains in one person sick with tuberculosis. Some of these strains are resistant to rifampicin, and some turn out to remain sensitive, and during some time we may continue treating the patient with rifampicine, and not proceed to the medicines of second row.” Maria also expressed gratitude to Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for conducting such training: “Unfortunately, previously we didn’t have institution training specialists on this particular modern equipment for diagnostics.  Thanks to the Program “Stop tuberculosis in Ukraine” of Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation “Development of Ukraine”, we gained such opportunity, and we improved our knowledge, raising quality of work of laboratory specialists, and, consequently, the reliability and timeliness of the results”.

Anna Barbova, Candidate of Medical Sciences, head of the National Reference Laboratory on microbiologic diagnostics of tuberculosis, made a remark that training organized by the Foundation, and supply of updated diagnostic equipment, raised the status of the National Reference Laboratory. “We are thankful to Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for realization of this training particularly on our base. Attendants received information on how to work with equipment from primary source, learned about capabilities of devices and correct use while conducting tests. Training was organized in such a way that theoretical information took turns with practical work. This enabled participants to receive answers to all the questions. Besides, atmosphere during the training was very respectful and warm, with participants satisfied to a great extent. And we are glad to close year with such a remarkable for us event”, - noted Anna Barbova.

With support of Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation “Development of Ukraine”, and on the bases of materials of this training, national experts and specialists of the Foundation developed training module on molecular-genetic diagnostics. This module will be implemented into the educational programs of Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, and will enable to receive state-recognized certificate and improve quality of preparation and potential of laboratory specialists across Ukraine.
