Because of the obsolete and worn out equipment that had been installed in the hospital before the upgrade, the TB detection rate of the hospital was very low (3.7%, while the standard rate is 5%).

“The old equipment for tuberculosis diagnostics was commissioned several decades ago, in Soviet times. That is why the quality of diagnostics was very low, and the safety of health professionals working with sputum was threatened. With new equipment all this risks are minimal,” said Vladislav Denisenko, the manager for detection, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis of Rinat Akhmetov's Foundation for Development of Ukraine.

The total cost of equipment is 80,000 hryvnias. The hospital is now equipped with all laboratory equipment necessary for high-quality diagnostics: microscope, distiller, sterilizer, laboratory scales, thermal containers, laboratory furniture, bactericidal irradiator, refrigerators, and containers for disinfection. The Foundation also provided laboratory consumables such as glass for microscopy, sputum containers, racks, smear staining kits, respirators, etc.

In the past two years, the Foundation has purchased TB diagnostic equipment for the hospitals in Donetsk (6 hospitals), Kramatorsk (2 hospitals), Snezhnoye, and Volnovakha.

In 2014, Yasinovataya and Yenakiyevo hospitals will be also equipped within the project.
