On 15 November 2013, Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine arranges a pre-release private screening of the documentary film Blef, ili s Novym Godom! (Bluff, or Happy New Year!) of Russian director Olga Sinyayeva in the cinema theatre Ukraina (5 Horodetskoho St, Kyiv). During four years, Olga Sinyayeva had filmed in different Russian childcare institutions. She started to make the film soon after she had adopted a child from an orphanage. This was the time when they started to destroy the foster care system in Russia and passed the notorious Dima Yakovlev Law, which bans US citizens from adopting Russian children.
Private screening of the documentary Bluff, or Happy New Year!
Yet, the above issues are not the topic of the documentary. The film is about the inner world of an orphan, who, despite the efforts of personnel, sponsors and presents from visitors, remains very lonely. The film is about the deprivation children suffer in institutional care when their most basic needs are not satisfied. The film depicts different facets of this mental state of emotional deprivation. We see a child swaying from side to side as if trying to find the security of motherly embrace. We see the lack of communications and attention for children.
These are the things that not only public servants, but also many ordinary people prefer to shut their eyes to when they call for building ‘nice childcare institutions’ and making presents for orphans during the holiday season. They see such measures and donations as their only duty and leverage to influence the situation. The film shows the post-Soviet system of childcare institutions from inside. The characters of children of different age, teachers, directors, volunteers, parents reveal themselves vividly.
There are no ready answers in the film, but the documentary makes viewers think and calls for changes in the system. The pre-release private screening is taking place just before the adoption of a European convention on the protection of children's rights. Discussions after the private screening will take place with the participation of film director Olga Sinyayeva; film producer and public figure, former pupil of the Soviet institutional care system, social orphanhood expert Aleksandr Gezalov; Ombudsman for Children under the President of Ukraine Yuriy Pavlenko; director of Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine Anatoliy Zabolotnyi.
