Kharkov Regional TB dispensary No. 1 held grand opening of TB Molecular Genetic Diagnosis Department in the Bacteriology Laboratory. The state of the art laboratory diagnostic equipment (biological safety cabinets, centrifuges, autoclaves, thermostats, freezers, etc.) and supplies for a total amount of UAH 4.5 million were purchased and supplied by Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation to improve the quality of TB diagnosis in Kharkov Region within the framework of "Stop TB in Ukraine" program with the financial support of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation installed modern diagnostic equipment in Kharkov Regional TB Dispensary
"The first in Ukraine molecular genetic laboratory is organized at the premises of Kharkov Regional TB Dispensary. It will significantly reduce the time of TB diagnosis from 3 months up to 2 days. As a result, the patient can get 99.98% accurate research results as soon as possible with the spectrum of drug sensitivity to all anti-TB drugs and immediately begin treatment under the right regimen, which is the key to a successful recovery from such serious disease as multidrug-resistant tuberculosis," said Anatoly Zabolotny, the Director of Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine.
Due to the automation of the state of the art analyzers, the laboratory throughput is 96 samples (patients) per day, indicating the availability of express methods for the patients in need of diagnosis. That is, with the opening of the laboratory, 95% of patients will be able to get an accurate diagnosis of drug-resistant TB within 2 days.
Automation of laboratory tuberculosis diagnosis not only improves accuracy and reduces the time of diagnosis, but also minimizes the risk of disease among the laboratory staff, which significantly increases the prestige image of the profession. The use of advanced techniques and equipment helps to reduce the risk of disease incidence among the laboratory staff to 0% as it excludes work with infectious material, the staff works directly with DNA.
The opening of modern diagnostic department at Kharkov Regional TB Dispensary No. 1 has become possible thanks to efficient public-private partnership between the Kharkov Regional State Administration and Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine. That is why the region has become a pioneer in the implementation of the best international standards and laboratory diagnosis practices.
Within "Stop TB in Ukraine" program, an official opening of PCR laboratory (performing molecular genetic diagnosis of tuberculosis with polymerase chain reaction) in Mykolaiv Region is planned by the end of the year. After successful piloting, it is planned to expand the organization of PCR laboratories and international standards for TB diagnosis to other regions of Ukraine.
