5000 children from No to Orphancy portal find their families

Share the news

Today the counter on the “No to Orphancy” portal for national adoption shows “5000” – the number of orphan children who have lost parental care and stayed in Ukrainian foster homes, and who finally have found their new families. The portal was launched 3 years ago by Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine and its partners – NGO “Magnolia” and the Ministry of Social Policy – namely with the purpose of increasing national adoption rates and understanding that each child needs a family.

In her comments on this small victory, Daria Kasyanova, the head of the “No to Orphancy” program of the “Development of Ukraine” Foundation, noted the portal has 12 294 more children’s adoption profiles published. “Unfortunately, along with increased number of adopted children the number of children who have their profiles added to the portal grows as well. Thus together with our partners we continue working on the propaganda of national adoption, on spreading the information on children being better off in a family. And we are glad that each year the number of children who found their new loving parents grows. For instance, last year Ukrainians adopted 2 thousand children. And regular talks with adoptive and foster parents, the children’s recovery and academic success stories give confidence and optimism in our work.”

For reference: as of January 1, 2013, the number of orphan children and children who lost parental care in Ukraine is 92,865. 11,751 children are being cared for in foster families and family-type children homes.
